Tucked behind a hedge on the corner of North and Whiting Streets, Jim Henderson has been creating sculpture for over fifty years. His five thousand square foot studio in Hanover is cluttered with hundreds of sculptures and drawings. Upstairs, in a room bright with sunlight and stark white walls, years of journals fill shelves, providing some insight into his process. Fifty years of dated and bound notebooks contain letters to loved ones, private thoughts and fears, sketched solutions to visual problems and dreams, as well as notes taken from the volumes of books he reads. His favorite American writers, who, like the artist, love the natural landscape, inspire recent work.
“ Exemplary work…fine, solid, handsome and intelligent”
Ivan Karp, OK HARRIS WORKS OF ART (NYC)
“ The juxtaposition of hard and soft materials as well as the clearly visible with the partly hidden lend an aura of intrigue and other worldliness to sculptor Jim Henderson’s work.”
THE BOSTON GLOBE
“There is pain and an odd eroticism in the work. The subject is confinement and release, death and resurrection.”
Dennis Corbett, ASSOCIATION OF ARTISTS RUN GALLERIES (NYC)
"Jim Henderson has the ability to lend the grace and simplicity of haiku to a pillar of granite and a chunk of a tree side by side in a case made of glass, wood and steel.”
Cate McQuaid, THE BOSTON GLOBE
